Board of Education Vacancy for Post 5 - March 2026
After 17 years of faithful service to the students, staff, families, and community of Houston County, Helen Hughes has announced her resignation from the Houston County Board of Education, effective Tuesday, March 31. We are deeply grateful for her years of leadership and dedication to public education. As she begins a new chapter, she looks forward to spending more time with her family and enjoying life with her new grandbaby.

The Board of Education is now looking to fill the vacant Post 5 seat by appointing a representative who will serve through the end of the term in December 2028.
Eligibility:
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for Board of Education service and must live in Post 5 in order to be considered. A map of Houston County Board of Education Post 5 can be found here.
Application Submission:
Those who are interested should submit a resume and/or letter of interest to Claudia McDaniel at the Houston County School District. Additionally, applicants must complete a Declaration of Eligibility. Documents can be:
- emailed to claudia.mcdaniel@hcbe.net;
- mailed to the attention of Claudia McDaniel at 1100 Main Street, Perry, GA 31069; OR
- dropped off in person at 1100 Main Street in Perry. The deadline to submit materials is Friday, March 20, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.
Qualified residents who submitted their documents by the deadline may address the Board at the Work Session on April 6. Each qualified resident will have up to 3 minutes to speak during the meeting, which will be held at Northside Middle School at 6:00 p.m.
