Personal Electronic Devices: What Families Need to Know
To help students stay focused on learning and engaged with their teachers and classmates, students in Pre-K through 8th grade may not use personal electronic devices during the school day. This requirement is in accordance with Georgia law (HB 340). Our high schools currently have rules regarding cell phone use during the school day, but beginning in the 2027-2028 school year, this law will also apply to all high schools statewide.
What devices are included?

- Cell phones
- Smartwatches
- Tablets and e-readers

Does my child have to leave their cell phone at home?
No. The law does not prohibit students from bringing a personal electronic device to school. The law says students should not view, hold, wear, or use the device during the instructional day.
Students who bring a device to school must keep it stored, such as in a bookbag, from the beginning of the instructional day until the end of the instructional day. An example could be storing the phone in their backpack.

Students may use a personal electronic device when its use is specifically required by an IEP, Section 504 Plan, or medical plan.

What happens if a student uses a device during the school day?
Students who do not follow the personal electronic device rules may receive consequences in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. Consequences may increase for repeated violations.
What if a device is lost, stolen, or damaged?
Students who bring personal electronic devices to school do so at their own risk. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal devices.
Why do we have this policy?
Our goal is simple: fewer distractions and more opportunities for students to learn, participate, and connect with the people around them. By limiting access to personal electronic devices during the school day, we can help create classrooms where students are more focused and engaged.
