Canvas Cyberattack

May 8, 2026 - Important Security Update Regarding Third-Party Vendor (Instructure/Canvas)

Houston County School District has been notified that Instructure, the vendor that operates Canvas, experienced a nationwide security incident affecting nearly 8,800 schools and universities. Canvas is used by our school district to share lessons, submit assignments, and communicate with teachers.

According to Instructure, a hacker obtained certain data associated with district Canvas accounts. Instructure has not yet provided us with school-specific details, so we do not know the full extent the Houston County School District was directly impacted.

According to Instructure, student passwords, date of birth, social security numbers, and financial information were not involved. However, some limited user information — such as names, school email addresses, classroom assignments, and internal Canvas messages — may have been involved. The Houston County School District does not share social security numbers or financial data with Canvas, so please be assured that your student’s most sensitive information has not been compromised.

This incident involves the third-party Canvas platform and not the internal technology infrastructure of the Houston County School District.

Our district will continue working closely with Instructure while monitoring updates and coordinating appropriate response efforts. We understand that this situation may be concerning and appreciate your patience as we work through it. Our team is closely monitoring updates from the vendor and will continue to keep you informed as we learn more.

Instructure has created a site to learn more about the incident and their response. It can be found here: Security Incident Update & FAQs | Instructure
