What is Accelerated Reader? |
|
Accelerated Reader is a reading motivation program open to ALL STUDENTS. The Accelerated Reader program is a computerized motivational reading program that provides continuous reading assessment and accountability. The Accelerated Reader motivates students to increase their reading practice by reading more, while giving teachers a precise record of how much and how well each student is doing.
How Does It Work?
To use the Accelerated Reader, a student reads a book from the program's book list that is at their current reading level, and then tests his or her knowledge and comprehension by answering multiple-choice questions on a computer. The computer handles all scoring and record keeping automatically, achieving closure by immediately presenting the student with a score. Teachers are allowed to generate a wide variety of class and individual performance reports, helping them to both assess and motivate student reading. Most teachers require a certain amount of AR points or books read, per 9 week grading period. Check with your students Language Arts teacher to find out their requirements.
How Are Students Motivated?
Students earn points for each book they read by successfully passing a computerized quiz on that book. These points can then be redeemed for various awards and recognition at school. For example, each 9 weeks the Media Center sponsors the Mall Wall, where students can exchange their points for prizes.
