Beliefs and Mission Statement
Mission Statement
Our mission at Pearl Stephens Elementary is to provide a safe and challenging environment, enabling students to become lifelong learners through the collaborative efforts of home, school, and community
Overview: Narrative Description of the Process of Defining the School’s Belief and Mission
Sensing a need to modify and revitalize our mission statement to reflect the academic and social needs of our current student population, Pearl Stephens Elementary formed a committee to review and evaluate the current beliefs and mission statement. Administrators, teachers, parents, students, and business leaders worked collaboratively in this process.
The committee reviewed the current mission statement, the school’s profile, and demographic data to ascertain the current needs of students and community. Other instruments utilized by this committee to collect data were the NSSE Opinion Inventories and the NSSE School Beliefs Inventory which reflected input from students, teachers, parents, and administrators about the quality of our school. Using a systematic approach, data was collected and analyzed. Items from the NSSE School Beliefs Inventory were ranked on a scale from 1-5, five being strongly agree and one being strongly disagree. Consensus of the committee was reached by using the highest rated responses from the school community on this inventory. Statements that reflected similar beliefs were combined for further analysis and used to develop our beliefs.
Based on the curriculum audit, test data, scientific research, inventory data and changing expectations in education, we redefined our mission statement to promote effective teaching strategies to accommodate the needs of current and future students.
In early December, drafts of the beliefs and mission statement were distributed to staff, faculty, a randomly selected group of students, parents, and community members for review and comment. The committee made modifications based on the responses that were collected. During our December faculty meeting, the beliefs and mission statement were discussed and consensus was reached at that time.
We also discussed how to communicate our beliefs and mission statement to students, parents, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders. It was decided to display copies of our mission statement in classrooms, hallways, and other pertinent places throughout the building. Students, staff, and faculty will recite our mission statement daily following the morning announcements. Our mission statement will be imprinted on all school related correspondence. Our mission statement will also be featured on the Houston County Educational Access Channel.
