Advanced Placement US History
Main text: The American Pageant (BAILEY BOOK)
The AP U.S. History course is designed for the serious high school student who is prepared for the rigors of a college level class. A college textbook, The American Pageant, is used in the course. Students must be disciplined readers in that they will be required to read and be tested over several chapters at a time. In addition, they will be required to read books beyond the regular text. Students should also expect to write essays, both in class and outside of class. Students should also expect to study nightly for this course. Success in the AP class directly correlates to the amount of preparation students are willing to undertake. Please understand that completion of the course does not guarantee college credit; the student must take a national exam in May which is administered by the College Board. Students earn scores of 1-5. Most colleges will only accept scores of 3, 4 or 5 for credit. I encourage you to check the standards for the schools in which you are interested.

1st semester: Students will be expected to read two books in addition to their required textbook reading. One of the books is Miracle at Philadelphia. The other book is your choice. It must be a book of good historical quality and MUST be approved by me. You may choose books from my personal library, or you may choose books from other libraries. READING CARDS: You will be expected to take notes as you read. These notes will be entered on 4 x 6 lined note cards and written in INK. It is not necessary to fill the entire card; however, you must have more than one fact per card. Usually students have about 50 cards for the first book. Look for unusual facts that stand out as you read. On the last card, you must state your opinion about the book and the author's qualifications. Grading is based on quality of notes and following instructions. Refer to the syllabus link below for additional information.
