History of Perry High School

Perry's public schools began in 1889. The Mayor, W. C. Davis, and council requested authority from the Georgia Legislature to establish and maintain a system of public schools within its corporate limits to be supported by public taxation. In 1924 a legislative Act was passed creating the Perry Consolidated School System embracing a five-mile radius.

Also in 1924 the Perry school district voted $85,000 of bonds to build the county's first brick school building which is located on Main Street in Perry. When the building was occupied in 1925, the school had eleven grades, eleven teachers, and around 300 pupils. By the 1938-39 school year all high school students in the county were attending Perry High School.

In 1956, Perry High School opened with the present facility on North Avenue consisting of two halls. In 1958 the agricultural building and gymnasium were added and in 1960, a third hall was added. In 1968, a fourth hall and technology building were opened, and in 1975, an addition was made to the existing cafeteria and media center. In 1984 a two-story vocational building was opened. In 1988 the cannery was opened, and in 1990 the new fine arts auditorium was constructed. A new multi-purpose building opened in the Fall of 2004, and a new two story addition with administrative complex, media center, lobby, and science labs opened in 2006. The existing cafeteria was expanded and a new kitchen constructed in 2006.

Since 1996, the building has had three renovations: it was carpeted in 1998; a new roof was added in 1999; and new flooring, ceiling, and electrical was added in 2006. The physical facility is composed of 80 classrooms.
