Debra Berrie became a Houston County High School bear in 2006. Prior to coming to HCHS she taught at Northside High School for 16 years. She earned a BS in Biology from Georgia Southern University and a MS in Science Education from Georgia College and State University in 2004. Biology is her favorite science and the science that she teaches most often.
   
Mr. Larry Block

Larry Block is in his fourth year as the Interrelated Science Resource teacher for the Houston County High School Special Education Department.  He is a veteran teacher with ten years of teaching experience in Gwinnett and Houston County combined.  Mr. Block graduated high school from Balboa High School in the Panama Canal Zone before attending the University of Georgia on a 4-year Army R.O.T.C. scholarship.  He has had graduate work at the Uniformed Services University of Health Science, Bethesda, MD and the University of Georgia, Athens, GA where he was awarded his Master’s Degree in Science Education.  Mr. Block lost his first wife to breast cancer after 31 years of marriage.

 

Mr. Block is currently married to the former Deborah Williamson Brewer, a Houston county native.  Between them they have seven children (ages 36-15) and seven grandchildren (ages 7- 4).  His youngest son currently attends HCHS.

 Mr. Block served this country as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps with 22 years of combined active and reserve duty.  His second career was as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Bristol-Myers Squibb & Co. prior to finding his calling as a science teacher.

Laura Byrd is an Advanced Placement and Honors chemistry teacher at Houston County High. She has taught for 21 years since graduating from the University of Georgia with a bachelor's degree in science education. She has also earned a master's of education in leadership and a specialist in leadership from Columbus State College. She worked extensively with the Region, State and International Science Fairs, she also served as Chairperson of the Houston Regional Science and Engineering Fair. In addition, Byrd co-sponsors the Houston County High National Honor Society and is a staff member of the Black and Silver Brigade Marching and Competition Band. In her spare time, she fosters dogs for the Perry Animal Shelter.

Mr. Fitzgerald received a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics from Oklahoma Christian University of Science and Arts, a M. Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Southern Mississippi and an Ed. S. degree in Educational Leadership from Columbus State University. Prior to teaching at Houston County High School he taught at Bucalevu Secondary School, Taveuni, Fiji, and at Richton High School, Richton, Mississippi. Mr. Fitzgerald is thankful for the opportunity to have worked with the students of Houston County High School since 1997. He is currently teaching Physics and AP Physics and have taught some mathematics classes in the past.

Ms. Thompson is a native of Warner Robins and a 1999 graduate of Houston County High School. She received her BS in Secondary Science Education with an emphasis in Biology from the University of Georgia. She began her teaching career at Warner Robins High School in 2004 and came to Houston County High in 2006. In addition to teaching, Ms. Thompson is the Junior Varsity football/competition cheerleading coach.

Kimberlyn  Jackson received a BS in Chemistry from Troy State University. She has taught in Houston County since the fall of 2004. Prior to coming to HCHS, she taught in for the Killeen Independent School District in Killeen, Texas. Ms. Jackson currently teaches Chemistry and Study Skills.

Ms. Durden grew up in Macon, Georgia. After 4 years in the Air Force, she earned a bachelor�s degree in Biology from the University of South Carolina. She began her teaching career in South Carolina but has been teaching at Houston County High School for the last 5 years. She currently holds a Masters in Education degree. She is certified in Biology, Reading, Special Education and Early Childhood. Ms. Durden has a total of 14 years teaching experience and has taught in all areas of certification. Ms. Durden is currently teaching Biology and Environmental Science.

Mr. Molyson graduated from Louisiana State University at New Orleans as an Environmental Biologist in June 1970. He had joined the Louisiana Air National Guard the previous summer and was commissioned as a Safety and Disaster Preparedness Officer in soon after graduation. In July 1971 he married his college sweetheart, Margaret. From 1970 to 1975, he worked as a Research Biologist at Tulane Medical School and later as an Environmental Biologist for Shell Chemical Company. In 1975, Mr. Molyson left Shell Chemical and entered the University of New Orleans, earning a BS and later a Masters in Science Education. From 1976 to 1981, Mr. Molyson taught General Science, Biology and Oceanography in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. In 1981 Mr. Molyson returned to full-time status in the U.S. Air Force as a Major in Intelligence. From 1981 to 1991, Mr. Molyson served in as Chief of Intelligence for an A-10 fighter squadron including an 8-month tour in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during Desert Storm. In 1992, Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs. Molyson and their two daughters were transferred to Robins AFB, where he served as Chief, Intelligence Operations Plans and Training for Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC). In 1998, Mr. Molyson was promoted to full colonel and became Director of Intelligence for AFRC. He retired in 2002 as Assistant Director of Operations/Intelligence for AFRC. Mr. Molyson spent 2002-2003 writing a book on World War II aviation and became involved in computer support for Houston County High School. In early 2004, Mr. Molyson updated his teaching credentials and joined the teaching faculty of HCHS. He now teaches Astronomy and Environmental Science to an outstanding group of 11th and 12th graders at the school.

Although she now calls Georgia her home, she grew up in New Orleans where she attended college and graduated from LSU in New Orleans in 1973 with a BS in Secondary Science Education. She also earned her Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the same university and her Specialist Degree in Educational Administration from Columbus State. She has taught a wide variety of students in her twenty eight years in teaching and has been teaching in the gifted program at HCHS since 1993. Mrs. Molyson is also the Science Department Chair and has represented the county on several state committees for the Georgia High School Graduation Test and the End of Course Tests and is on the state Science Education Advisory Committee. Mrs. Molyson is married to Mr. Joseph Molyson who is the Astronomy teacher here at HCHS. They have two adult daughters, Elizabeth and Katie and son-in-law Jason Stevens.

Renetha (Niece) Newman (USAF Retired) is in her first year as the Inter-Related Science teacher at Houston County High School. She graduated from Fort Valley State University with a B.S. in Agriculture Education, and then passed the GACE to become certified to teach Science. She teaches Physical Science, Environmental Science, and Biology.

Anita Ross started teaching at HCHS in 2005. Prior to that, she taught high school science in Bibb County for 22 years. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Mercer University, Master of Science in Biology from Georgia College and a Specialist of Science Education degree from University of Georgia. She has two children, Ben and Allison.

Mr. Bill Schmitz

Bill Schmitz is a Biology teacher at Houston County High School. Mr Schmitz joined the faculty of Houston County High after retiring from the United States Air Force at Robins AFB in 2001. He graduated from Montevideo Senior High School in Montevideo, Minnesota in 1973 and then earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Biology from the College of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Mr. Schmitz also holds a Masters in Public Administration from Troy State University and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Georgia College and State University.
