The Houston County Career and Technology Center (HCCTC) project began in the late-1990's when Dr. Charles Holloway, Superintendent, and the Houston County Board of Education began searching for an alternative educational plan for vocational/tech-prep students.

A study of successful alternative educational plans across Georgia and Texas yielded the current plan. In 1997, the HCBOE passed a bond package, which contained $500,000, to renovate the Middle Georgia Technical Institute campus after MGTI's move to their new location. This renovated facility was to house the new Houston County Career and Technology Center. This action clearly demonstrated the support that our community has for its alternative school programs.

The Center is designed to accommodate the vocational/tech-prep student who has not been successful in the traditional high school setting. The program offers vocational opportunities in a growing variety of programs and facilitates core instruction with online computer technology. The Center is operates as a true school of choice for those Houston County students who are interested in achieving a technical/career diploma. Student success will depend upon maturity, self-discipline, and utilization of available resources.

In Fall 2010, the official name for the HCCTC was changed to Houston County Career Academy (HCCA). Currently HCCA has an enrollment of approximately 90 full-time students and 450 part-time students attending career preparation classes. The students are enrolled in a course of study from the current selection of Automotive, Business and Computer Science, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Health Care Science, Computer Networking, Engineering, Manufacturing, Electronics, Criminal Justice, Teaching as a Profession, or MetalsTechnology.
