Ms. Cormack earned a Bachelor's degree in English from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Immediately after college, she attended the University of Georgia School of Law in Athens, Georgia and obtained a law degree. Ms. Cormack practiced law in Albany, Georgia for several years until she moved to Warner Robins in 2000. Deciding that she enjoyed reading literature more than legal briefs, she began taking education classes at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia in order to obtain her teaching certificate. She joined the faculty of Houston County High School in January 2005. Ms. Cormack has taught courses in 10th grade English and Speech and currently teaches five classes in American Literature. She resides in Warner Robins.
ABarbour Ms. Amy Barbour

Mrs. Barbour received her bachelor’s degree in English with secondary education certification from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and began teaching ninth grade at South Johnston High School in North Carolina. She then taught drama, journalism, honors and college prep ninth and tenth grade English at Ben Eielson High School in Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska for two years. On returning to North Carolina, Mrs. Barbour received her gifted certification and continued her teaching career for four years before relocating to Houston County. Mrs. Barbour also holds a master’s degree in School Administration and Leadership. Here at HOCO, she serves as the English Department chair and teaches AP Literature and Composition and Honors British Literature. She and her husband Stephen have two children, Hannah and Landon.
CBarbour Ms. Crystal Barbour

Crystal Barbour earned her BA in communication from Mercer University in 1989, and later added a certificate in Secondary English Education from Mercer. She has taught English literature and composition at Houston County High School since 2001. She previously taught English for eight years at Southwest High School in Bibb County. Ms. Barbour completed her gifted certification in 2003 and now teaches ninth grade honors, as well as tenth grade college prep. She is also a Teacher Support Specialist and mentors new teachers in the hopes of helping them remain in the profession. She is currently working on her M. Ed. in Secondary Education / English at Georgia College and State University.

Jamey Richardson begins his 22nd year as a teacher and coach in the fall of 2007. He graduated from Dublin High School in 1979 and attended the University of Georgia, earning a bachelor’s degree in English. Later, he received a master’s degree in English Education from Georgia Southern University and an Educational Leadership Specialist Degree from Lincoln Memorial University. In addition, he has In-Field Gifted certification and Advanced Placement English certification.

He has coached a variety of sports in his career in Georgia which include football, boys’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ golf, boys’ and girls’ tennis, and boys’ and girls’ swimming. As head coach or an assistant, teams he has coached have two runner-up state finishes (one football and one golf), three final four state finishes (tennis), four region championships in football, four region championships in tennis, four county championships in swimming, and two individual state champions in golf.

He began teaching English with seventh grade and has since taught English at every level through Advanced Placement. This is his third year teaching British Literature at Houston County High School. This will be his third year as swim coach and second as tennis coach here at HoCo.

He and his wife, Karen, live in Bonaire.
Cowart Ms. Susan Cowart

Ms. Cowart is a native of Warner Robins. She received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and a master's degree in English Education from Mercer University. Ms. Cowart taught for 13 years at Warner Robins High School before coming to HCHS in 2001. She received her gifted certification in 2005. She currently teaches 12th grade college-prep English and 10th grade Honors English. Ms. Cowart is married with two children, a daughter at HCHS and a son at Feagin Mill Middle School.
Dean Mr. Jody Dean

Jody Dean is a native of Warner Robins. He received a bachelors degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in English from Valdosta State University in 1999 and a masters degree in Educational Administration from Albany State in 2006. He has been teaching for eight years including four years at Warner Robins High School, one year at Rutland High School, and three at Houston County. Mr. Dean teaches 9th grade English at Houston County along with being the head ninth grade football coach and the head boys basketball coach. He and his wife have one daughter.
Engel Ms. Laura Engel

Laura Engel, a first-year teacher at Houston County, is orginally from Carrollton, Georgia. She graduated cum laude from Georgia Southern University in 2006 with a B.S. in secondary english education. Ms. Engel is currently teaching College prep. 10th grade literature and composition. Ms. Engel resides in Macon, Georgia where her fiance attends Mercer University School of Medicine. She will be getting married in December of 2007.

Jason Brett is a native of Perry. He received a B.S. in Communication from Valdosta State University in 2003 and a Masters degree of Education with an emphasis on Instructional Technology in 2004. This is his first year teaching at Houston County. For the past 6 years, he was an assistant baseball coach at Valdosta State University. Before going back to school, he was drafted by the New York Mets in the 21st round. He played four years in the Mets organization. Mr. Brett teaches 9th grade English at Houston County along with being an assistant baseball coach. He and his wife live in Kathleen with their dog, Rawlings.
Giddens Ms. Kathy Giddens

Kathy Giddens earned a Bachelor's degree in speech and drama education from Georgia Southern College, a Master's degree in English education from Georgia Southwestern, and an Education Specialist degree in language education from the University of Georgia. She taught one year at Dodge County High School. For seven years she taught English, drama, and history at Hawkinsville High School and for seven years served as Pulaski County School System's gifted resource teacher. From 1989 until 1994, she taught Honors language arts at Warner Robins Junior High/Middle School, and from 1994 until 1999 she served as the school's instructional coordinator. In 1999, she returned to the classroom. Ms. Giddens officially retired in 2004 but continues to teach three Honors English 9 classes in the morning at HCHS.
Hinnant Ms. Sherin Hinnant

A graduate of Georgia College and State University with both BA and MA degrees, Sherin Hinnant has been teaching in Houston County for thirty-five years and has served in five schools—three high schools and two junior highs. She has not only taught every Honors English course available in grades 7-12 but has also written and revised curriculum for each of them. Throughout her career she sponsored numerous extra-curricular activities including Anchor Club, Beta Club, National Honor Society, Literary Team, and Varsity Cheerleaders; she now serves as the Gifted Lead Teacher at Houston County High School, a position she has held since the school opened. Although she retired in 2005, she still works as a part-time employee who teaches Honors British Literature to juniors enrolled in the gifted program. She is the proud grandmother of six-year-old Josh Fraley and four-year-old Ashlyn Fraley.

Mrs. Chitwood earned a BA degree in literature and writing from California Sate University and a MEd in English education from Columbus State University. Mrs. Chitwood has taught at HCHS since 2005, and previously taught at Smiths Station High School in Alabama.

Mrs. Jones earned her BA in English and Social Work at the University of Montevallo, Montevallo, Alabama. She completed a Masters Degree in Business, specializing in Management and Supervision, from Central Michigan University. Mrs. Jones also completed an additional year towards her MSW from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, prior to earning her commission to the United States Air Force. Additionally, she completed her first year towards an Ed. D from the University of Southern California, while on active duty. After retiring from the Air Force, she completed her certification in Secondary Education, from Mercer University where she is now completing a Master in Education. She has been teaching at Houston County HS since January 2002. During the ’04-’05 school year, Mrs. Jones teaches four ninth grade college preparatory classes and one Career tenth grade class. In addition to her teaching duties, Mrs. Jones is also the sponsor for the HOCO Silver Steppers Step and Dance team.
Mrs. Jones is married and has two daughters.
Hamilton Ms. Karen Hamilton

Mrs. Hamilton has taught at HCHS since 2001, after moving from Dodge County High School in Eastman. She currently teaches American literature and AP English language and composition. In addition, she advises the newspaper and yearbook staffs. Mrs. Hamilton obtained her B.S.Ed. and M.Ed. in English Education from Georgia Southwestern State University. She is currently writing her dissertation to complete her Ed.D. in Curriculum Studies from Georgia Southern University. She resides in her native Hawkinsville with her husband, Kurt, their two Italian Greyhounds, Nico and Brucie, and a zoo-like assortment of other dogs and cats.

Gloria Lawson is originally from Iowa. She graduated from The University of Texas in 1995 with her degree in English. She started her education career in the lower grades and has worked in many of the elementary schools in Houston County. She came to Houston County High in 2005 to teach British Literature. She teaches both Career Tech and College Prep seniors and loves it. She lives in Perry with her husband Tommy and their three children.

Mrs. Lyon received a Bachelor of Science degree in English Education from Northern Michigan University. She has taught 7th—10th grade English in Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and Georgia and was a substitute teacher for three years in Alaska. This is her 14th year of teaching and her 7th year of teaching in Houston County. She taught 9th grade English for four years at Northside Junior High in Warner Robins. She and her husband, who is retired from the Air Force, and her two teenage sons live in Warner Robins.
Staines Mrs. Rebecca Staines

Mrs. Staines graduated from Valdosta State University with a B.S. in Education specializing in secondary English, and Columbus State University with a Masters Degree specializing in Leadership. She has taught for six and a half years, five of which have been at HCHS. Mrs. Staines has taught grades 9-12, and currently teaches SAT Prep, Honors American Literature, and Advanced Content American Literature, as well as sponsors the HCHS Beta Club. She and her husband reside in their native Perry.
Thompson Mr. Ike Thompson

Ike Thompson is in his second year of teaching with the Houston County High School system. Before coming here, he taught and coached two years for Macon County High School. He comes here from the state of Michigan, born and raised, where he earned his B.A. in English from Western Michigan University. Ike currently teaches 10th grade Literature and Composition. Ike is now in the midst of working on his M.A. in Professional Writing. Ike says he hates the snow and therefore plans to be in the south for a very long time.

David Ondike came to Houston County High School in 2006. He holds bachelor degrees in both Political Science and Spanish from Georgia Southern University. From Georgia State University, he also holds degrees in Philosophy, English, and Education. Mr. Ondike earned his masters degree in Education from Central Michigan University. For the past eleven years, he has taught English, Honors/Gifted English, AP Literature, AP Language, and AP Art History. Currently, he teaches Humanities and College Prep English. He and his wife, Whitney, have two children and live in Perry, Ga.

John Osborne has been a teacher at HCHS since 2006. He teaches 10th and 11th grade literature classes. He received his B.A. in English from University of Maryland, College Park and his M.Ed. with an emphasis in Adult and Higher Education from University of Oklahoma. Mr. Osborne is retired from the U.S. Air Force and taught for six years in South Carolina before moving here. His wife, Janet Osborne, is a SMSgt. on active duty at Robins Air Base.
