Welcome to Matt Arthur Physical Education

Parents and Students please LABEL your COATS and JACKETS for class!

Dear Students and Parents

The Physical Education Department would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to Matt Arthur Elementary School. Our physical education department employs two full-time physical education teachers. Our program focuses on teaching life-long skills and guiding children in taking responsibility for their health and actions. Physical education is not recess but a laboratory for learning. All students are required by Georgia State Law to take 60 clock hours of physical education each school year.
Your children will be in physical education class two or three days per week. Please check your child’s agenda for his/her specials schedule and help insure that your child is prepared for class.
As professionals, we must insure your child’s safety. Please have your child wear soft-soled shoes or tennis shoes on physical education days. If girls wear dresses or skirts, we strongly encourage them to wear shorts underneath. Not being prepared for class will affect your child’s grade.
Students will only be given one combined grade each grading period for both behavior and participation. Students will be graded S, N, or U. Parents will be contacted by phone or in writing if any concerns arise. Please check the student handbook (page 27) for more information and our grading policy.
If your child becomes ill or injured and is unable to participate we must have a note from a parent or guardian. To be excused for three or more classes we will expect a physician’s statement.
We hope that you will join us in encouraging your child to develop positive attitudes toward health and physical activity that include regular exercise, proper nutrition, and good hygiene.

We know that optimum health and well-being contribute to successful academic endeavors
Sincerely,

Robin Bradley and Bonnie Gehling
