Reading with Your Child
Many times students can read the words, but do not comprehend (understand) what they are reading. Using these tips will enhance the time you spend reading with your child and reinforce comprehension skills that are crucial in becoming a fluent reader.

Step 1: Before you read
Look at the cover of the book. Read the title. Ask your child: What do you think this book will be about? Where do you think the story is going to take place? Who do you think the book is going to be about?

Step 2: While you read
Read each page. Look at the pictures on the page. Ask your child - What is happening? Who is in the picture? Where are they? What are they doing? Think about the main character. Ask your child - What is he/she like? How is the character feeling or what is the mood of the character? What is he doing? What do you think the character will do next? What will happen next?

Step 3: After you read
Ask your child - What was the main problem in the story and how was it solved? Who was the main character in the story? What happened at the beginning? Middle? End? What is the setting of the story? (Where did the story take place?) Retell the story in your own words
