Teacher Hall of Fame Nomination Form
The inaugural Houston County Teacher Hall of Fame induction will be held this Sunday, Mar. 18, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Eric P. Staples Building. The ceremony will be followed by a reception. The public is invited to be a part of this community celebration to honor 14 extraordinary teachers who made a significant difference in the lives of their students.
The teachers selected as the first inductees into the Teacher Hall of Fame are listed below in alphabetical order along with their years of teaching in Houston County.
* Mrs. Gladwyn Sproull Barfield, 1947-1974
* Mrs. Ruby Pickens Carpenter, 1939-1965
* Mr. Earl H. Cheek, 1955-1974
* Mrs. Marion Hunter Cheek, 1955-1975
* Mrs. Claire Tyson Coleman, 1938-1968
* Mrs. Mamie Horne Coleman, 1925-1958
* Mrs. Blanche Youngblood Collins, 53 years
* Miss Sara Frances Couey, 1923-1965
* Mrs. Florence Smith Harrison, 1940-1975
* Miss Sara Lewis, 1948-1970
* Mrs. Molly Cason Moss, 1954-1974
* Mr. Adleigh Douglas Redmond, 25 years
* Mrs. Susie Mae Tharpe 25+ years
* Mrs. Malissa Giles Tucker, 38 years
Criteria used to select the initial Hall of Fame members included:
♦ retired from the system in 1975 or earlier;
♦ 20 years of classroom experience in Houston County preferred;
♦ degrees held;
♦ evidence of quality teaching;
♦ significant contributions to student success; and
♦ involvement outside of the classroom, such as a sponsor of extracurricular activities.
A committee of former Houston County educators and school system graduates was appointed by Superintendent Danny Carpenter to select the first honorees to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The committee members are Matthew Arthur, former superintendent; Thomas “Boot” Hunt, Perry High School Class of 1959; Herman C. Ragin, Perry Training School Class of 1945 and first principal of Kings Chapel Elementary, and Beth Conley McLaughlin, Warner Robins High School graduate.
