Perry High Wins 1st at State One-Act
Perry High School won first place at the State One-Act competition held on Nov. 14, 2009, at Northside High School. Perry High advanced to the state competition by winning first place at the Region 1AAA One-Act competition with its performance of Susan Zeder’s Wiley and the Hairy Man.
Director Joe Sendek commented, “When we finished our show, the students and I could not have been happier. Win or lose, we performed our best. Winning was the icing on the cake!”
A final encore performance of Wiley and the Hairy Man will be presented in the PHS Theatre on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door.
The production involved a cast of 28 and a crew of 60 students. Set deep within the mysterious Tombigbee Swamp, Wiley and the Hairy Man is a spine-tingling tale of a boy and his worst fears in the swamp -- eventually overcome by Wiley himself. Through rhythm and rhyme, the cast creates the mystery of the swamp. The magic of this play is not fairy dust -- it is soil. In an exciting duel of wits, Wiley learns to rely upon his own resources and conquers two villains; the Hairy Man and his own fear.
The play has four central characters. Carson Albritton is Wiley, and Halston Kirkpatrick is the Hairy Man. Hannah Price portrays Wiley’s mother, Mammy, and Avery Jones plays Wiley’s best friend, the dog.
Perry High is located at 1307 North Avenue. Dr. Darryl Albritton serves as principal. For more information call (478) 988-6298, extension 21320, or e-mail joseph.sendek@hcbe.net.
