PRE-KINDERGARTEN
All Houston County elementary schools have a pre-kindergarten program. The purpose of this program is to help prepare children for the kindergarten level of instruction. Program expansion is expected.
KINDERGARTEN
A full-day kindergarten program is operated for children who will be five years of age on or before September 1. Enrollment in the kindergarten program is on a voluntary basis. These early childhood education classes develop a child's positive self concept and attitude toward school and learning and provide foundation experiences which enhance the child's physical, intellectual, social, and emotional growth. Each class of approximately 22 students is staffed with one teacher and one paraprofessional.

ELEMENTARY INSTRUCTION
The elementary instructional program in grades 1-5 addresses the curriculum areas of language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, health and safety, music, art and physical education. Emphases are placed on an integrated language arts program which includes reading, process writing, spelling, and grammar; and a hands-on computational skills program in math which uses a laboratory model and manipulatives for instruction. The science program also employs an inductive, hands-on laboratory model, and the social studies curriculum is sequenced to parallel the student's growing and expanding relationships with others.
The basic program of elementary instruction is supplemented by special programs such as Title I reading and math, the Remedial Education Program (REP), the Special Instructional Assistance (SIA) Program, and special education and gifted classes. A program of computer and technological awareness is being phased into the total program.

MIDDLE SCHOOL INSTRUCTION
In order to address the needs and interests of students during the transition between elementary and high school, Houston County has implemented the middle school concept for students in grades six through eight. This personalized approach to schooling is achieved through connection course offerings in a variety of areas, flexible scheduling and an interdisciplinary curriculum. Teams of teachers, who have common planning periods of approximately 85 minutes per day, work with groups of students in a 5 hour academic block with enrichment and remediation provided as needed. It is apparent that many innovative and educationally sound practices are being produced through this instructional concept. |

HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUCTION
The instructional program in grades 9-12 operates on the semester system. Courses offered are based upon state and local graduation requirements. Each course is taught in accordance with the Quality Core Curriculum (QCC), developed by the Georgia Department of Education. Students choose the college preparatory or technology/career program of study. The Technology/Career Program includes four years of English and three years of math, science, and social studies. College Preparatory Program requirements are the same, plus one additional year of mathematics and two years of foreign language. Twenty-two Carnegie units are required for graduation.
In addition to academic core subjects, students have the opportunity to take courses in foreign language, visual arts, drama, band, chorus, AFJROTC, physical education, family and consumer science, business education, agriculture, and a variety of other technology, cooperative, and apprenticeship programs. Gifted, special education, and remedial education programs meet the needs of students who qualify. Advanced placement courses are available for students who wish to earn college credit while in high school. Career objectives are included in all content areas throughout the curriculum. Joint enrollment and postsecondary options are available to students in grades 10, 11, and 12.
